The capital city is Warszawa (Warsaw) with a population of almost 1.7 million.
Other major cities are Łódź (0.8 million), Kraków (0.8 million), Poznań (0.6 million), Wrocław (0.6 million), Bydgoszcz (0.4 million), Katowice (0.3 million), and, on the coast, Szczecin (0.4 million) and Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot (0.7 million). Altogether, there are 18 towns of more than 200,000 inhabitants.

About 62% of the population lives in urban areas, while the remaining 38% is rural.
